Our Heritage

An idea that quite literally took flight.

While travelling from Korea to the Philippines, the founder, a doctor and passionate coffee enthusiast, found himself reflecting on his dream of opening a coffee shop. During that flight, he sketched the very first concept and logo of what would soon become Dr. Coffee.

That moment marked the beginning of turning a long-time passion into something real. His love for coffee had been built over years of travelling across different countries, exploring cafés and experiencing a wide range of flavours, brewing styles and coffee cultures. Each cup he tasted deepened his appreciation, and inspired him to create a space that would bring together global influence and local identity.

With this vision, he invited a small group of friends to help bring Dr. Coffee to life. Together they focused on the heart of the business: the coffee itself. Each drink was refined over time, often taking two to three months of testing and feedback from multiple tasters before being finalised, so that every cup served met a high standard of quality, taste and consistency.

From a small kiosk to a clinic for the tired.

Dr. Coffee started as a small kiosk with a simple menu of well-crafted beverages. Despite humble beginnings, it quickly gained attention for its distinct taste and thoughtful preparation. A key part of its identity was the use of locally sourced coffee beans from different regions in the Philippines, including Baguio, Benguet and Atok. By highlighting local beans, the brand delivered unique and authentic flavours while supporting Filipino coffee farmers and their communities.

As the business grew, so did its concept. Inspired by the founder's medical background, Dr. Coffee adopted a clinic-themed experience. Drinks are presented as a daily dose of coffee, with sizes labelled as dosages instead of the usual small, medium and large. Transfusion packs, beakers and syringes give customers a memorable, playful yet meaningful experience, where coffee is treated as a remedy for everyday life.

What began as a simple idea during a flight has grown into a distinctive coffee brand that blends passion, innovation and purpose.

The Chapters

How it got here.

The shop was built slowly, and mostly by tasting.

Part one The idea

  1. 01

    Sketched mid-flight

Travelling from Korea to the Philippines, the founder found himself reflecting on his dream of opening a coffee shop. During that flight he sketched the very first concept and logo. He is a licensed radiologist, and a passionate coffee enthusiast.

  2. 02

    Years spent tasting

His love for coffee was built over years of travelling across different countries, exploring cafés and meeting a wide range of flavours, brewing styles and coffee cultures. Each cup deepened his appreciation, and the wish to bring global influence and local identity together in one place.

Part two The build

  1. 03

    Built with friends

He invited a small group of friends to help bring Dr. Coffee to life. Together they focused on developing the heart of the business, which was the coffee itself.

  2. 04

Two to three months a drink

The team went through an intensive product development process. Each drink was refined over time, often taking two to three months of testing and feedback from multiple tasters before it was finalised.

  3. 05

A kiosk and a short list

Dr. Coffee started as a small kiosk offering a simple menu of well-crafted beverages. Despite the humble beginnings it quickly gained attention for its distinct taste and its thoughtful preparation.

Part three The café

  1. 06

    Baguio, Benguet, Atok

A key part of the identity was the use of locally sourced beans from different regions in the Philippines. Highlighting local beans delivered unique and authentic flavours, and it supported Filipino coffee farmers and their communities.

  2. 07

    Sizes became dosages

Inspired by the founder's medical background, the shop took on a clinic theme. Drinks are presented as a daily dose of coffee, with sizes labelled as dosages instead of small, medium and large, alongside creative elements like transfusion packs, beakers and syringes.

  3. 08

    A bigger room

From a small kiosk to a larger and more developed space, Dr. Coffee kept refining its menu, improving its quality and strengthening its identity. It opens at seven in the morning and runs past midnight.

The Mark

A stethoscope that learned to spell.

The logo is a deliberate integration of medical symbolism and commercial identity, conceptualised by a licensed radiologist intending to open a coffee shop for students and healthcare professionals. The design draws directly from the clinical environment, particularly the urgency and structure of an emergency room, and translates it into a cohesive, recognisable brand mark.

The seamless transformation of medical equipment into typographic form establishes a strong visual link between healthcare and the café concept. The clean, minimal execution keeps it legible and versatile everywhere it lands, from signage to a phone screen.

  • The bell

The circular element encircling “Dr.” is the chest piece of a stethoscope, signifying clinical authority, diagnostic precision, and the professional background of the owner.

  • The heartbeat

The pulse line running through the tubing emphasises urgency, care and life, the language of emergency medicine borrowed for a coffee bar.

  • The letter C

The tubing flows into the wordmark, where the eartube is stylised to form the “C” in COFFEE. The instrument and the name are the same object.

Overall the mark balances the demanding nature of the medical profession against the restorative role of a coffee shop: a brand grounded in clinical expertise, and responsive to a market that needs somewhere to rest, study and recover inside a high-pressure environment.
